What are the types of business analysts?

“Business Analyst” is one of those job titles that means very different things in different companies. Over the years I have worked alongside several flavours of BA, and the day-to-day work can look surprisingly different from one role to the next. If you are exploring a BA career — or hiring one — it helps to know the main types and what each actually does.

1. IT Business Analyst

The IT BA sits between the business and the technology team. They are involved in the design and modification of business or software systems, working closely with subject-matter experts and stakeholders to capture business requirements and translate them into something a development team can build. If you enjoy bridging “what the business wants” and “what the system can do,” this is the classic BA path.

2. Data Business Analyst

The Data BA analyses data and uses visual modelling and critical-thinking skills to extract and present key business information to decision-makers. The output is usually analytical reports and dashboards, and some Data BAs also provide input for investment and financial decisions. You will often see this role under titles like Sales Analyst, Operations Analyst, Reporting Analyst or Marketing Analyst.

3. Functional Business Analyst

The Functional BA has deep knowledge of a specific business domain — supply chain, finance, HR and so on. Rather than focusing on systems, they use that domain expertise to recommend best practices and support change initiatives. This role suits people who have grown up inside an industry and understand its processes inside out.

4. Business Systems Analyst

The Business Systems Analyst creates the technical design of a software system, though they may not write the actual code. Unlike a pure BA role, this person needs a fairly deep — and sometimes fairly broad — understanding of technology. It is a great fit if you have a technical background but prefer design and analysis over hands-on development.

How to choose the right path

There is no single “correct” type of business analyst — the right one depends on where your strengths and interests lie:

• Love connecting people and systems? → IT BA
• Energised by numbers and insights? → Data BA
• Deep expertise in one industry? → Functional BA
• Technical but design-minded? → Business Systems Analyst

Most BAs end up blending two or three of these over a career, and that versatility is exactly what makes the role so valuable. Whichever direction you lean, the common thread is the same: understand the problem deeply before jumping to a solution.
