Interviewing – Here are a few tips to ace it

If you have been working in the small and medium scale organizations since the beginning of your career and have been fortunate to learn and grow yourself mastering multiple roles, you might find yourself in need of some interviewing advice. I have been working as a business analyst, consultant and a senior manager in my respective jobs and have managed to make my way up the career graph by learning as much as I could. The problem arises when you are unsure of the roles where you fit the bill and end up interviewing continuously for wrong roles.

I could not help but retrospect on what more was expected after multiple interview rounds. The thorough discussions at respective companies from startups to multinational corporates went into vain. In case, you are going through the same friction, give this piece a short read.

Multiple rounds yet no response from HR. Have you ever been kept on hold where the HR prefers to keep the silence? And asks you to wait saying that he/she is awaiting a response from the client. If yes, then stop wasting time in hoping rather concentrate on how you apply.

Knowing your resume by heart – Did your play along won hearts of the Interviewees? After having multiple discussions with as many people (mostly HRs) as I could. The only key I found was being an expert knowledge base at the projects handled by you. Especially, if you are interviewing for client facing role or team leader role. You should be firm in your answers and well prepared with a logic backing the same. The interview can go very deep dating back to your first project. Make sure, you have all the details on your tips.

.Keep it precise – Remember, you are not there to tell stories but to convince them in the most precise and smart manner possible. A tip here is “Read”. Reading will start from the job description and will take you to your resume. Resume where you will have to sit and build a bridge between the two. If you don’t have hands-on experience in any of the tools. Make sure to utilize online resources like YouTube videos and Google to support your research. Your mere effort can take you places.

Use examples supporting your effort – If you have worked in multiple industries before, you will be asked a reason for making this sudden switch into corporates. Accept the fact that you might hold little experience but you are willing to learn more. If you are interviewing for a senior role, quote examples where you can portray the team leading qualities in your past experience.

Research about the company well – The current affairs of the company especially the industry and projects making the headlines can save your day. LinkedIn can help you stay up to date with the current updates of the company. All you have to do is follow the Company page. The other factor which could be a game changer for you is to thoroughly go through the job description. You can then search the same job role on other job portals to ensure you have all the expectations laid out correctly in front of you.

Tools Knowledge – It is best to do in-depth research on the tools mentioned by you in the resume. If you are not well versed with them, don’t hesitate to edit your resume again. The chances are pretty high that the discussion will circle around them and chances of one of the interviewees being pro at it can never be overlooked. Prepare well and the interview will most likely turn in your favour.

Resume formatting – You can goof up with the months and years which will look a sheer carelessness on your part. Hence, it is wise to give your resume a final read before converting it into a PDF. Formatting is another important factor which comes into an immediate notice of HRs.

Get clarity on job description before interviewing – Whenever you update your resumes on respective job portals, you will be contacted by consultancies having requirements from corporates for particular roles. Don’t be too quick to jump for interviews at the earliest without preparing for it. The chaos can leave you with a doubt in your head whether the skill set was lacking or your approach to the questions was not up to the mark.

Hope it helps you to get a job at your favourite companies. Your comments are welcome as it keeps me motivated to research and write more.
