These are the different categories of Business Analysts that I am aware of.
- IT Business Analyst – The analyst involved in the design and modification of business systems or Software systems. They interact with Subject matter experts and business stakeholders to understand Business Requirement.
- Data Business Analyst – The analyst who analyze data and use visual modeling, critical thinking skills to extract and present key Business Information to decision makers. The output expected is mostly analytical reports. Some “Business Analyst” also provide inputs for investment and financial management decisions. There are some common titles for these jobs such as Sales Analyst, Operation Analyst, Reporting Analyst, Marketing Analyst
- Functional Business Analyst – The analyst who have secured knowledge in a business domain such as supply chain, finance, the human resource who can assist in developing or recommending Best Business Practices for Change initiatives.
- Business System Analyst – This role is generally to create the technical design of a software system but may not do actual coding. However, unlike a true business analyst role, this person needs to have a fairly deep and sometimes fairly broad understanding of technology.
